A Bergen County chiropractor was sentenced to three years probation Friday for fraudulently obtaining claims money from insurance companies.

Kyung P. Yu, who is also known as William Yu, 45, of Closter, was given three years probation conditioned on 30 days in the Bergen County Jail by state Superior Court Judge Patrick J. Roma in Hackensack, according to state Acting Insurance Fraud Prosecutor John Kennedy.

Yu’s sentence was based on his Feb. 15 guilty plea to a charge of third-degree theft by deception.

In pleading guilty, Yu, a chiropractor and the owner of North Jersey Rehabilitation Center in Englewood Cliffs, admitted that between March 14, 2007 and Jan. 22, 2010, he obtained $1,285.77 from Travelers Insurance Co., Liberty Mutual Insurance Co., and American International Group, by submitting fraudulent claims which gave the impression that medical services or treatments were performed. Yu was not entitled to any reimbursements.

Det. Thomas Ference, Civil Investigator Julia Ferriera and Deputy Attorney General Cheryl A. Maccaroni were assigned to the investigation.
