A Savannah physician and a chiropractor have been indicted by a federal grand jury in Savannah on charges of conspiring to defraud Medicare and Medicaid.

The 50-count indictment charges Dr. Rafael M. Razuri of Savannah and Eric J. Baty, a chiropractor formerly of Savannah, with conspiring to bill more than $5 million in claims to Medicare, Georgia Medicaid and private insurance companies, U.S. Attorney Lisa Godbey Wood announced Thursday afternoon.

According to a press release, the two men, while owners and operators of Southside Medical & Rehabilitation Center, billed for fraudulent physical therapy services provided to patients at the center.

In addition to the Medicare and Medicaid claims, the indictment charges that the defendants conspired to defraud private insurers by creating false and fictitious medical and billing records of automobile-accident victims, the press release stated.
